Southwark News has this week covered XRS’s Why Not Southwark campaign, emphasising that two years after a climate emergency, Southwark Council’s climate emergency remains unpublished.
This follows Southwark News quoting XRS activists in February as the newspaper looked into whether Southwark Council’s trumpeted £101 million investment in climate initiatives goes far enough (spolier alert: it doesn’t), and quoted young XRS activist Caoimhe Basketter’s powerful speech to Southwark Council’s Cabinet in January 2021:
“You declared a climate emergency yet you treat it like a game of who looks best. There is no reward for effort or showing that you tried. There are only catastrophic consequences if you fail… there is no second try if you run out of time, because science doesn’t grant extensions.”
